New Generation Jazz
New Generation Jazz is an Arts-council supported project that is building bridges. The aim is twofold – to help young artists develop audiences outside the capital, and to introduce young people in Brighton and the South-East to jazz and demonstrate what a vital, living tradition it is today.
A year-long programme of monthly gigs has been running continuously since in October 2015 showcasing the very best in rising UK talent.
Each gig is on the last Friday of every month at the Verdict Jazz Club. The tickets are held at a low price for students and young people. Each of the featured artists also leads a workshop in one of the schools and colleges across the city, giving our young musicians some hands-on experience of what it’s like to play jazz.
New Generation Jazz also run stage takeovers at major jazz festival events and a yearly Summer School with all-star tutors.
New Generation has partnered with educators, promoters and festivals in Brighton and beyond. The project fosters links between the many different participants in the local scene, and the City’s educators, to ensure the continuation of the music we all love into the New Generation.

Lighthouse Studio Jazz (in partnership with Bournemouth Modern Jazz Club/Swanage Jazz)
Lighthouse is the largest UK multi-arts centre outside London, with a 1500 seater concert hall (home to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra plus other artistes from a variety of genres, including major league jazz artists), a 700 seater theatre, an arts cinema and a 130-seater Studio (the Sherling Studio), plus various other spaces. Studio Jazz takes place in the Sherling Studio, which was refurbished in 2017. It's a great space with top spec PA, Yamaha grand piano, in-house technicians and a backline (Pearl drum kit and Warwick bass amp) loaned by our education partners, SoundStorm Music Education Agency, who often partner with us to organise outreach workshops and mini concerts for visiting artists in local schools. The audience sits in the round on 3 sides of the band. The acoustics in the Studio are particularly good, and many bands choose to play almost acoustically. Studio Jazz is programmed by Dan Somogyi (who set up Bournemouth Modern Jazz Club in 2004) and Fred Lindop (who established and programmed Swanage Jazz Festival until 2018). Recent highlights include Stacey Kent, Brotherhood of Breath, Espen Eriksen with Andy Sheppard, Natacha Atlas, James Taylor Quartet, Monica Vasconcelos, Alan Barnes, Soweto Kinch, Adrian Utley with Albuca, ZAUM, Liane Carroll, Tigran, Tim Berne, John Etheridge, Soothsayers and many more. Jazz takes place on around 16-20 Friday evenings per year, from September to May/June. Workshops usually take place on the afternoon of the concert

Venue capacity Up to 200
Booking policy:
We've put on gigs here with notice from 2 days to over a year, though usually booking 4 – 8 months in advance. In the two years the Arts Centre has been running (at Jan 2020) there've been around 300 events here. Sometimes we get big audiences, sometimes not. But most artists enjoy performing here. As well as the baby grand piano, we have a vintage Hammond + Leslie (as well as a working pipe organ).

Our performance programme runs through a network of around 50 volunteer promoting groups and together we organise over 140 high quality professional events of music, theatre, dance and more every year, usually in village halls, right across rural Dorset.

Promoter capacity Up to 200
Booking policy:
Gigs are occasional when the venue is free and purely when the promoter - Nod Knowles - is interested in the band - it is a personal venture and the programme is his sole choice - and when he and the band can make the finances work. There are particularly good opportunities for gigs to be arranged as fill-in dates on a tour schedule because they can be fixed at relatively short notice and, subject to the venue being free, on varying days of the week.
